swedish Academy is an academy for the promotion of Swedish culinary heritage founded in 2015. The Academy has 18 members, 9 women and 9 men, representing a large variety of skills ranging from farmers to chefs and university professors. The name of the academy is chosen with the vegetable swede/rutabaga in mind. This vegetable was formed in a hybridisation between cabbage and turnip in the late 17th century in what was at that time Swedish territory (today Finland). From there it spread to western Sweden, further to Scotland and further out in the world. The swede/rutabaga is therefore an excellent symbol for the spreading of the Swedish cuisine.

The swedish Academy tries to spread knowledge and starting from 2017 will have a number of annual awards to reward good examples. One of these is intended to be a prize for the promotion of Swedish culinariy heritage outside Sweden.
